We have done a lot in QP Environment Fair 2012 and we simply can't resist to post yet another photo blog!  We have here also some of great tips on how to protect the planet Earth. Some common sense but we all now that common sense is not really that common and requires constant reminder. Doha Event: QP Environment Fair 2012

It's this kind of event that make us love Doha more! Where else would we be encourage to do something noble like saving planet earth while receiving freebies, lots of goodie bags, free food, free play area and freedom to join environment friendly competition. A superb event! It was a fun filled spectacular and noble afternoon spent at QP Environment Fair 2012.  It's similar to QP Environment 2011 but much better.

One of the greatest benefit for us - this is another awesome way to encourage kids to save planet earth.

We did enjoy the free goodie bags a LOT as much as everyone. But we were a bit sad to notice that a lot of  visitors focused on grabbing these freebies as much as they can to the point of hoarding. Kinda beat the purpose of optimizing resources and energy to save planet earth. How low could anyone be when it comes to free notebooks and crayons is simple beyond us. We're just a bit affected because we get passed by a lot of times which prevented the Turknoys to enjoy every booth. We were particular to the kids' activities and our focus is that they enjoy and learn from the event as much as they could. Not to be bring home some crayons which eventually be a culprit of our messier home.

I don't really mean to rant but I was  really embarrassing especially when one family started begging to be given MORE and MORE freebies like the bag contains diamond and gold or they haven't eaten in years and the bag contains a piece of bread for the entire family. Okay, a bit exaggerated but seriously!

It's great that the environment fair was not done on a weekend unlike last year. If this was weekend, it could have been worse.

In an environment fair, ask what you can do for the environment and NOT (so NOT!) what freebies you can get.

Anyway, we did enjoy the event a lot and yes, we did get some freebies after kids enjoy the environment-friendly activities. Most importantly, our kids learn a thing or two about the environment.

And on to our favorite photos of the event:

Rant aside, it was a great time spend with kids and will definitely visit again next year. But we are hoping that there should be some sort of screening for the visitors; to identify who are those who will visit for the freebies and who are those who wish to learn about the environment. We are certainly the latter.

Earth Hour 2012 and Beyond!

Kylie's Logo for Earth Hour 2012!
Earth our yay.  For one our.

So how did you celebrate your Earth Hour 2012? If you are in Doha, did you dine in one of the hotels participating in Earth Hour? I bet it was fun, romantic and meaningful. I've heard that Grand Hyatt and Wyndham Hotel offered scrumptious dinner in candlelight. Sounds so fabulous, right?

As for us, we stayed home and turned off the lights thirty minutes early. The kids usually sleep at 8PM especially during school times.

Kerim tried to blow the candles out. After several unsuccessful tries to keep the candle light, we gave up and tried to sit still in the dark. After two minutes or so, Kerim started pushing the sofa towards the light switch and turned on the lights. Haha!

Kylie on the other had, enjoyed drawing her Earth Hour card for all. Okay, using her iPad may not be as earth-friendly but it was only for few minutes.

It was a fun night with lots of laughter. We should do it at the very least every month, after all, every hour should be Earth Hour.

It's actually pretty easy, it's not all about the lights anyway. It could be about saving fuel, (walking instead of taking the car), water conservation (recycling water used in the bath), other resource conservation initiatives (garbage recycling, paper recycling, waste reduction) and environmental awareness (reading a book about environment protection.)

It's a good idea, right? Now, let's see if our family can sustain this.

Here's us hoping that everybody does their part in environmental protection not only during yearly Earth Hour.

Celebrating Earth Hour 2012 in Doha

Earth Hour 2012 in Doha once again! It's that time of the year again when the world put emphasis on the importance of worldwide effort to protect the planet earth.

All throughout the year, the Turknoys have been reading a lot of books and doing lots of activities about protection of the planet. It's a continuous effort from everyone in the planet, kids and adults alike. However, we really really like the idea of Earth Hour. It's one hour exclusively for the Earth celebrated by everyone.

We are here again in Doha as we were last year. We maybe celebrating  tomorrow night at Aspire Park as there are activities for kids during the Earth Hour. However, seeing that there will be school and work day after, it might be pretty challenging for the kids to be awake. Normally, kids are already fast asleep by 8PM. We might celebrate a little earlier.

A little news about Earth Hour Doha:

DOHA: The Qatar National Convention Centre, the Khalifa Torch Tower and Sheraton Doha are among buildings in the city to join Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Empire State Building in New York and world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa to switch off at 8.30pm tomorrow for Earth Hour 2012.
This is the fourth consecutive year Qatar will be part of Earth Hour in which more than a billion people in over 135 countries participate in the largest global voluntary action on climate change.
Several organisations such as Movenpick Hotel, The One, HSBC and Q-Tel which have been participating since 2009, will be joined by Qatar University, the Four Seasons, the Intercontinental hotel, Qatar Building Company and even the Pearl as they switch off lights to show their support.
A highlight of this year’s local Earth Hour event is the Earth Hour Unplugged in which Qatar’s youngsters will have the opportunity to come together at Aspire Park for a fun-filled hour of music, entertainment and a chance to get involved in efforts to protect the planet.
Attending an event is not the only way that people can participate. Simply by switching off lights for the hour, everyone can be part of this unique annual event. THE PENINSULA

Hope everyone will participate. One hour, one person , one family can make a big difference. Furthermore, here's us hoping that we practice Earth-friendly activities beyond Earth Hour.

YES - go beyond the hour we can and we will!

Kids Book in Doha: How to Help the Earth by the Lorax

After watching the movie, The Lorax, we are on the mission to help save the planet Earth.
How to Help the Earth-by the Lorax (Step into Reading) is a supplement book we love reading after reading The Lorax book.  The book has lots of tangible ways to show our "awful lot of care" for our planet.

This book, however, is not a Dr. Seuss book. It's a Step Into Reading Book for our avid reader kids. The Lorax gives some tips on how to save planet earth. Kylie can read this like a pro! And Kerim loves to listen.

The star of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss makes his Step into Reading debut in this rhymed reader that offers kids easy suggestions for going green! After explaining how the trash in a wastbasket ultimately ends up in a landfill or incinerator, the Lorax suggests realistic ways children can reduce waste, such as by carrying a lunch box, donating old clothes and toys, sharing magazines with friends, recycling cans and bottles, and using rechargeable batteries. He also explains how they can save energy around the home by turning off lights, taking shorter showers, donning sweaters to stay warm, and much, much more. All in all, this is a great introduction to helping the Earth and helping kids step into reading!

acting to "think" what are the ways we really really need to do - with  a gun pointed on her head!

This is what she came up with!
Ways to Save the Planet Earth - according to Kylie.

1. Take a short shower.
2. Use the back of paper.
3. Use paper bag.
4. Throw trash in the bin! (she emphasized this with the exclamation point!)
5. Use old toys.
6. And plant a tree! (again with explanation point for emphasis!)

And that is how she serves the planet.

We just love it when the Step into Reading books have a point to make. Not only we practice our reading, but we embed some values into these tiny creatures of Earth. Awesome!

Here are some of the other The Lorax Step Into Reading which may interest younger kids:
