Guest Post: The Happiness Blog Tour and Giveaway

***DRUM ROLLS*** Please welcome our guest blogger today here in Turknoy: Bryan Cohen and his great work: The Post-College Guide To Happiness. Now, let's all follow that guide and make sure we are happy after college, after all our life doesn't end after our education. Or is it we don't really need education to have a life? Oh well, he knows better so here he goes:

Bryan Cohen here, guest poster and author, promoting my new book The Post-College Guide to Happiness for The Happiness Blog Tour. I'm giving away free digital review copies of the book and doing a giveaway for paperback copies, audio copies and even a Kindle Fire! Read on and check out the info below the post. "Joy can be real only if people look upon their life as a service, and have a definite object in life outside themselves and their personal happiness."- Leo Tolstoy

What You Do When you're at a cocktail party (if they still have those) one of the most frequent questions you might hear is "What do you do for a living?" While it helps a lot to learn this answer when you want to broadly get to know someone, there is a much better question you could ask. If more people asked and talked about this particular question, we might live in a happier and healthier world. The question in question is "What do you do for a service?"

Nearly everyone does something for a living, whether or not she likes it. This job could be enjoyable but it may also be the kind of hell on earth that leads to frowning, hair pulling and a bit of banging one's head on the wall. People get jobs like this either out of necessity, settling or for a sizeable paycheck. But if you get a job for a service and a calling, you're much more likely to enjoy it. Ask me what I do and I'll tell you I'm a writer of self-help and writing reference books.

Ask me what I do as a service and I'll tell you that I try to help people past their writing and mental blocks to create a life or an artistic work that can only be described as extraordinary. Writing and the money it generates sustain me, but the service of helping people to grow fulfills me. If you're in a job you hate that doesn't make you happy, either find a way to draw some kind of calling or service from it or find a new job that can. People often associate doing what they love with being poor, but in my case, the more I've served a distinct purpose outside of myself, the more I've earned. It's not even close as I've earned more than double! Even if you have to relegate this purposeful work to a business on the side or a hobby, you will have trouble being fulfilled if what you do doesn't help others in a way that lines up with your goals.

So what will you do as a service to make you and others happier?

  2. Bryan...Great post. I'm an academic librarian. My service, that makes me and others happier, is to help students succeed in college and to connect readers to their books. It brings me a lot of joy.
